The Dark Knight Changed the Film Industry

The Dark Knight

The film industry is an entity that is constantly changing and evolving. One of the greatest changes to happen in recent years is the movie The Dark Knight. Superhero movies have historically been lighthearted like the new Avengers Infinity War movie. Even those that were more intense could hardly be described as “dark.” This all changed with the 2005 film Batman Begins, which starred Christopher Nolan. The film was monumental not only because it wound up being part 1 of a 3 part trilogy. Also for the first time, Batman was living and fighting in a realistic world. In the real world, not everyone gets saved and consequences do happen.

Marvel Movies

Marvel is notorious for making cheerful superhero films that always have happy endings. Even Marvel has decided to shake things up a little bit and started making movies that were a little more intense. Overall, the essence of their movies has remained the same. Marvel’s newest movie The Avengers Infinity was full of humor. Many of the scenes contained ’70s music and laughing where you might not expect laughing. With characters like Groot, it is easy to see that these movies are made for adults and children. There is no “dark” theme or humor to these movies. Not even spying on each others text messages with a spy app.

The Batman Effect

As mentioned in the introduction, this all started with the Batman effect. After that came The Dark Knight, the second installment in the trilogy. Even though it was not quite as successful as films like Black Panther or The Avengers. The Dark Knight was still a monumental success and changed the way that films are made. The other films are more pop culture based with a wider audience. The Joker, most famously played by Heath Ledger, redefined villains in The Dark Knight trilogy. To this day he is still one of the most infamous villains in a movie.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight and The Joker portrayed an interesting conflict. The Joker had a twisted view on humanity which gave the entire film a dark and dangerous feel. Heath Ledger’s genius in the character was what made the movie such a success. Many people say his performance was even better than Christian Bale as Batman. Another great contender is Tom Hardy and his performance as Bane. The character Bane was the villain in The Dark Knight Rises.

The Film Industry

Ever since Batman Begins, films seem to have more devious themes. Even Harry Potter movies have evolved to be “darker”. The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince were some of the darkest Harry Potter films. With the release dates of 2007 and 2009. They were created around the release of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The darkening nature of films has both positive and negative aspects to it. On one hand, it means that movies are getting more realistic and more intense, which for some viewers is a positive thing. As a fan of Christopher Nolan, I love The Dark Knight trilogy and the way that this series has effected the film industry. To see the best movies coming out in 2018 read my last post.
